I remember a lot of my friends stopping there.It's as if they didn't want to overpower Ash. Anime was all sorts of problems, primarily how would they make Ash not overpowered by keeping all of his old fully evolved Pokemon.
Anyways, in regards to hype killer, it was Gen 2. It had a lot of great ideas, but Johto also had a lot of flaws primarily progression after you beat the Elite Four and go into Kanto along with many of the new Pokemon not being heavy hitters enough to contend with some of the older ones. Thankfully many of which got evolutions in later gens.
