>>56195797Let me give you some advice with a big, fat MILEAGE MAY VARY disclaimer: Instead of answering the question with trivia and risking locking someone out of the conversation, try to take the time to explain why you like the music that you do instead of focusing on what precisely you're listening to. The layperson may not have any idea who Mac Demarco is, but chances are good they can identify with the desire to listen to something gentle and laid back when you just want to step away from the competition for a while. And if not, they can at least understand where you're coming from or be persuaded to understand.
Let me play dolls with two example conversations.
Example A:
>What are your favorite artists?>Have you heard of Jaxson Gamble?>Nope. Have you heard of Zack Hemsey?>Nope. This continual guessing game is frustrating and makes the conversation unfun. Tragically, this trivia reflects on you and makes you unfun by association.
Example B:
>What are your favorite artists?>I like listening to energizing music that hypes me up. A lot of music can sound energetic like Out Kast but still have depressing lyrics, y'know? Hey Ya is all about two people falling out of love, I can't vibe with that. Lately I've been paying closer attention to lyrics in music to have a more positive influence in my day.You see how one answer is more conducive to further conversation than the other? We can branch off into asking for recommendations or talk about how much of a bummer society is without us even realizing it sometimes, etc.
The Socratic method of being able to understand not just what you like but WHY you like it makes you appear more worldly and interesting.
