No one claims Unova rips off all of Gen 1's Pokemon, but a fair chunk of the Pokedex is clearly made up of expies of Pokemon from Kanto. Most of them aren't direct rip-offs either, but there's clearly a lot of thematic and design elements shared between a lot of them. It's not a terribly big deal, but it just makes you wonder what the thought behind the design process was. Why bother going through the effort of making so many Pokemon that just feel like knock-offs of previous ones? Was this the prototype for regional variants? Were they intentionally trying to evoke Kanto-with-a-twist, or was this genuinely accidental?
