He didn't appear in the anime or movies, he didn't have a mega evolution or special distribution, he wasn't plot-centric and he isn't particularly useful in competitive. His design literally catapulted him high in the eyes of the actual people.

Curiously enough, Greninja was actually nabbing #7 on a Poll Dorkly made of The Greatest Pokemon OF ALL TIME, until some buttmad dude in the comments rallied people to vote for the first gens because "Gen VI isn't even iconic".
His Smash Brothers inclusion will only inmortalize him among the greats. in that sense, he IS the new Charizard. But in an even greater way, for he reached those heights without even appearing in the cover of his games. A commendable achievement.
