The problem is that they're either so legitimately insane that it's impossible to believe they were able to function normally (and they are hypercompetent supergeniuses) which was the problem with Rose, or they're genuinely outright monsters (which isn't true either), or they're misguided with good intentions (which also isn't true). They're just kind of a mess. The twist and fact they're dead along with the true basis of their motives being (hopefully) forever a mystery helps to obfuscate that, and at the very least they're interesting rather than just embarrassing like Rose or Flare but they are still a mess.
