You are technically their equal and you treat them as such, but you are teaching them things, you are more so a figure of respect to them and while you treat them as you would you're friends outside of training and battling.... they have something that pushes them in a bit different light from anyone else. Its not impossible to work off of, but it does require an actual discussion with said Pokemon to figure out if the relationship is actually a healthy choice or if its uncomfortable/unhealthy choice for one or both of you.
I for one think these type of relationships would work best with time. Like if you and Gardevoir had been close friends for years and the relationship just naturally evolved into a romantic one. That's always better to me than it just jumping straight into romance in a short frame.
