A conquest driven nation from the east is carving a path through the region. Able bodied youngsters are drafted and recruited to become pokemon trainers to drive them back. You and your peasant friends are separated from the rest of the trainees during a raid, and the story would go from there, building a 'mon army, fighting enemy soldiers and making a name for yourself among the upper class. Eventually the enemy army gets hold of the not-box legendary and razes your hometown, so you and your friends go to seek out the box legendary (which would be built up to) and turn the tables in the conflict.
It all sounds pretty fanficcy, because it is. In my mind it wouldn't be too dark, just more mature, like Coloseeum was.
