The Alaigross battle's best quality was its animation and the writing of the battle was just completely uninteresting compared to Stevengross. The Alain one was just fast due to agility, until it wasn't and got hit with Electro Ball and went down quickly after, meanwhile, Steven's Megagross was shown to be able to calculate and predict every regular attack of Pikachu and made for a much greater challenge for Ash who was only able to down it tanks to the never before seen Z-move redirection that caught everyone by surprise, not to mention how it was executed by Megagross seemingly dodging it at first, another thing we have never seen before. So, yeah, in terms of narrative and thematic Pikachu vs Steven's Megagross > Pikachu vs Alain's Metagross.
