I just turned on my yellow edition and the save is still intact. It is the save of my brother who deleted my original save back then 15 years ago, which saddened me deeply, since I was very young and it was my very first Pokemon game.
I wanted to replay it for a long time already and want to start today, but considering these Pokemon survived for at least 15 years it's kind of sad to delete them.
Is it normal that batteries last that long? I had that yellow since 2000 I think.

No it won't. Because now, instead of having your bros in Sun/Moon where you can battle, trade and breed, now they'll be stuck as low res jpegs on your phone. You can't transfer them to Galar because they aren't in the dex, and you can't transfer back to Sun/Moon.

They will be in purgatory until Gamefreak allows you to take them out.

tl;dr: My whole adult life has been made up of decisions based on Pokemon. Being vague on the details (and omitting a few more examples) to avoid getting dox'd.

Worst thing is that I didn't even finish any of the 3DS games. The only thing pokemon couldn't do was make me overcome my dislike of tropical islands, hence why I skipped PokeHawaii entirely. And before you say anything, Kyushu is not actually tropical.

Similar thing happened to me.

Was drunk one night and opened my 10 year old DS carrying case with my games in it. The fucker broke and my games flew around the room. In my drunken state I thought I picked them all up. Only a few days later I realize my Moon is missing and find when the case broke, it was near my garbage can, and odds are it fell in and is now in a landfill somewhere.

Feels bad man.

Thankfully I had the living dex in the Bank to rack up free Battle Points, but all my competitive's and old friends are gone :,(
