I feel like X and Y are ALMOST great in so many different little ways, but didn't quite manage to go the extra mile necessary to really be considered fantastic. If I had to sum up this generation thus far in two words, it would be "Wasted Potential".
A few new single-stage Pokemon really could have used an evolution, Slurpuff and Aromatisse really feel like second-stagers, and a lot of older Pokemon got megas instead of receiving the normal evolutions they probably deserved more.
The introduction of the Fairy Type was meant to be a nerf to Dragons, but it actually shat all over Dark Types even harder.
Meanwhile Ice Types, Pokemon whose STAB moves were already the perfect counter to dragons, still only have a single resistance (to itself) yet received two newcomers who are slow and defensively oriented. If Gamefreak had really wanted a counter to Dragons, all they needed to do was make Ice Types better.
The AZ storyline was an interesting idea, but it wasn't really as well-incorporated into the narrative as it could have been and has a sort of tacked-on feel despite having a few poignant moments.
Trainers that actually have more than three Pokemon on their team are few and far between. Even the Elite 4 don't have full teams until Diantha.
Speaking of Diantha, she was basically a non-entity throughout the story. You never really feel invested in defeating her because she barely even seems interested in her position as Champion compared with her career as a movie star.
On the plus side breeding for IVs is now easier than ever, the concept of the Friend Safari is pretty great, and Kalos itself is a pretty nice region.
