And no they don't, they learn by association (eg, picking up the lead and saying "Walkies" means we're going outside, therefore "walkies" means "going outside"). That's why they act hurt and confused if you shout at them for shitting on the carpet or something - they literally don't know what the fuck you're vocalising.
