The artist too the fusion, or rather the concept of the fusion, then took it a step further than just combining solely the sprites - sort of a "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" approach - that is not so far departed from the combination of the sprites that it doesn't even resemble the original fusion. That being said I do dislike the insectile legs on the sides of the fusion.
