I'm sure that this idea has been shat on countless times but if we were to ever have a darker plot, what if fusions were finally introduced to the series? I can picture the evil team believing that single-type mons are inferior to dual types and so in order to bring them to their "full potential", they perform experiments resulting in fusions between single types. I'm imagining some counter arguments as to why this would be terrible and I'll try to address them to the best of my ability.
>You can't call it edgy fanfic bullshit because we've already had dark pokedex entries in Sun and Moon so something like this wouldn't be unprecedented and out of Game Freak's comfort zone.
>Obviously the fusions wouldn't look as horrific as pic related (although I do think it's kind of cool).
>They can work as a nice substitute as opposed to creating another 100+ mons for each new gen. Just introduce a sizeable chunk to keep things simple.
>In order to tone it down, portray the fusions as something dark at first but then have the mons adapt to it in a positive way similar to how fusions are shown in Dragon Ball and Steven Universe.
>Fusions can also make for a more interesting meta game.
