Ok /vp/, I have a theory. Just hear me out on this one.
What if Game Freak is secretly obsessed with Blaziken. Hang with me here, it would explain a lot.
So after Gen III, GF realized they peaked with fire starter pokemon and felt like they couldn't make any better than Blaziken. This would explain why the past 3 gens have all had Fire/Fighting for the final evolution of the starting fire type. They tried to emulate to perfection of Blaziken in the form of Infernape, and then when they weren't satisfied with that they tried again with Emboar. But they realized early on in development of Gen V that they couldn't recreate Blaziken, so they created dream world simply to make Blaziken better in the form of speed boost.
Since it is apparent that GF does whatever it pleases and is now consumed with making Blaziken more powerful, they developed Mega Evolutions around making Blaziken the epitome of overpowered and are promoting this by distributing Torchick internationally.
When you think about it, the whole concept of Mega Evolution is completely pointless. Lucario, Absol, Mawile's mega evolutions could be written off as new evolutions all together and Mewtwo and Khangaskan's could just be new forms. Ampharos' is just a white wig and puffy tail, if they wanted to make him better, they should have just changed his type to Electric/Dragon and given him a new ability as opposed to lazily changing his look. The only mega evolution that was really a roadblock to the pokemon formula was the new Blaziken design, which could only be excused through a new game mechanic.
You watch, most of the starter evolution lines won't get a Mega Evolution, and the ones that do won't be nearly as broken or focused on as Mega Blaziken.
