I don't like how rare TMs were from gens 1-4, I get the idea of making you carefully choose when to use your TMs. But why are most of them non renewable? TM Taunt and Thunder are both relatively useful moves but while Thunder can be bought in the department store, I need to buy a whole game to use Taunt again. That makes no sense to me.
Making TMs infinitely reusable was a step in the right direction but it wasn't the right fix - I didn't like how you could just teach your whole team powerful moves with no cost whatsoever. TRs bring back the scarcity of the most useful TMs while also making it reasonable to reacquire them. IMO they're the perfect compromise.
