If not without taste, than yours are simply rigid, favoring the stuff that fits within the same universe as the games heavily, over creativity and talent (which aren't mutually exclusive of course, but even so). There's all kinds of settings for a Pokemon tabletop game or story to take place in, there's nothing wrong with deriving new worlds from what we know of the original.
