You literally cannot realistically create an artistic rendition of a sentient being without simultaneously giving it a certain disposition in that same rendition. Nobody looks at fucking Sharpedo and goes "whoa he might be a bitey asshole or he might be affectionate and cuddly, who knows!"
The problem is too many of them have an overly friendly disposition, which makes them seem less wild and animalistic. The starters, yampe, and morpeko all seem domestic and infantile to the point of almost being insulting, more likely to be found in a daycare than a safari. Pikachu was a mistake. Whoever thought it's a good idea for pokemon to wave at the viewer should be fired.
