XY and ORAS have this recurring theme of infinity energy and how it's both universal to Pokemon's existent and relatively unknown. It would make sense that Infinity Energy that isn't quite as distilled would make a generic power-up instead of the drastic form change that mega evolutions give. Who knows, maybe it would have been a 3-turn thing like Dynamax ended up being where all stats were just raised by +2.
