So the game starts out with Oak giving his usual speech, and suddenly we're warped to a scene of Steven Stone teaching DICKS how to attack. After Metagross destroys a common street rat, Steve states that DICKS is ready to become a trainer.
After DICKS picks Turtwig as her starter, Steven's PokeNav beeps and he has to run to Kanto. He gives DICKS a Trainer Card and tells her to go bother Oak for a while.
Something seems off about the Turtwig's stats but it might just be my imagination. Route 21 is above the starting town (Sybric Town), and the only things of note so far are a Heart Scale and a neat pond. Route 21's music is from Rustboro Town.
We head in the direction of Route 1, to the west of Sybric Town.
