It's definitely a similar kind of deal. Although it's implied to be a bit more complex than that since apparently this "loop" happens over and over again and has been happening for many, many different timelines that ultimately influenced each other. So it's basically this, but with an unknown origin and ending in true "turtles all the way down" fashion.
