I will say though, I did agree with you when I first played it. It didn't really feel as Pokemon like as I would've wanted, and a big part of that is a lot of pre-established concepts were thrown out the window for it. Even minor things like the strength block being massive, the completely new soundfont, no rock gym at the start, the weird hologram video calls...
It really did end up making for a completely different feel. But looking back, those games have a serious identity. A lot more of an identity than any of the recent games have (Except Sun/Moon which admittedly was also a nice change of pace.)
