>>48580368Johto. Having everything close together gives you the feeling of truly exploring the entire region. The later games have so many massive map landmarks you never get to visit. Having mini adventures that end up bringing you back to a few key locations gives you the feeling of going on an adventure and then ending with a familiar place to start a new one.
Unova. Making things so linear would be a detriment, but the side areas mean every new location always has so much to it and makes you excited to go to the next one. Really encourages exploration. Also means it can section off big chunks of the map for postgame.
