What if instead we remove the steps system, and make it so the eggs hacthes based on time and that's it. It will practically be the same thing not just left, wait a while,.press right, and so on. Then you can add some mechanic that reduces the time it takes to hatch if you participate in battles and such; hell we could even a park where all you do is sit down and let your other Pokemon interact with other Pokemon just to pass the time, you could even have conversations with other trainers.
