XY and ORAS had substantially better gameplay, from the online interface to the training mechanics and different opportunities to play or Battle with your Pokemon. SM's only redeeming qualities to me are the cast of characters and world building. Even then, the pacing is terrible, there's interruptions everywhere, and it's hard to sit through the story more than once.
And it's funny that people complained about Gen 6 having no content, because all of the things that it actually did right are gone now. PSS was replaced by a clunky, counter intuitive hub world. Friend Safari was a great way to collect HA 'mons, but now you have to put up with shitty SOS Battles. Inverse, Triple and Rotation Battles are all out. Super Training and the related sub-games were replaced by a lazy, timed rewards system in Pokepelago. Battle Buffet is a poor man's Le Wow Cafe, where everyone uses even fewer Pokemon than before and you can only play in Singles. There's nothing like the Battle Chateau or character rematches, or any way to fight NPCs casually. Chain fishing, gone. PokeRadar, gone. Battle Institute, gone. Secret Bases, gone. The list goes on. If Gen 7 taught me anything it's to appreciate what I have...Alola is maybe fascinating if you want Pokemon to be a more story driven game, but otherwise boring as sin.
