The edits were nonsensical, no one's defending it.
They got DBZ Kai on local TV in the US with minimal censorship, and it still kept the Kikuchi/Yamamoto score, that's actually pretty impressive given how soccer moms ruin everything they touch here- not sure 4Kids deserves hate for that (except for the Piccolo Saiyan shit, yeah that was awful).
But 4Kids did the better Pokemon dub, didn't they? And the talented VAs itself were genuinely good enough Konami decided to rehire them unlike TPCi who went cheaper and lower budget instead, for Yu-Gi-Oh, even if the dub was shit.
I'm just saying perhaps the hate was overblown: most of it deserved for a lot of the others, but there was some good to come out of the studio too.
