The time difference between Cameran / Neuschwanstein and Kalos / Versailles is around 150 years, so even those crystals weren't probably around at that time and people relied more on training their Pokémon as shown in Conquest.
There probably wasn't any "revive" back then neither and so Pokémon probably died much more regularly. Also the lack of Stasis abilities like the Pokéball mean that a fainted / beaten Pokémon could not be stabilized in any way to bring it to a safe place.
