I don't think it's just nostalgia, I think OS Ash being very bratty compared to XY Ash makes him more relatable to children. Even today OS remains on streaming services when other gens get phased out as mentioned earlier, thatt can't simply just be from nostalgic adults tuning in. As for battles, I don't think the main appeal of OS is even the battles so much as the tension of the battles. My younger (aged 12) brother (I know this is just one example) seemed to enjoy watching random dinosaur fights on youtube over any battles from XY, but he'll sit through an episode of Kanto and giggle up a storm
