Ash not being able to control Charizard is a perfect example of Ash not being able to control him very well, and then getting stronger as a trainer once the relationship gets stronger. throughout the series it's canon that developing a strong relationship with the Pokémon makes for a stronger trainer. the alternative is stuff like team galactic naively using a device to control Palkia and Dialga or Team Rocket trying to control Mewtwo with the lord vader suit. The best and strongest and most powerful trainers win with great bonds and trust in their Pokémon.
