What's weird is that they keep showing up every time but Game Freak never does anything with them. Golduck hasn't had any meaningful changes since, what, gen 5?
At this point Golduck is even more of a dex filler than shit like Lumineon. Sucks because it's one of my favorites.

Meowscarada could be something out of a fairytale or a children's, in concept if not execution.
Cinderace, I just don't see any kind of basis for. Rabbits are sometimes stereotyped as athletic, I guess? But even then, the football theme is very unusual.

I honestly don't know. Pokemon suddenly became "cool" again during its release, after steadily loosing more and more relevance for the previous three or so gens.
And what's strange is that it precipitated a lot of big events like Go and the Switch. Hell, it came out at a time when Nintendo as a whole was in a bad rut.
I remember the hype around it clearly but in hindsight I can't really explain how it happened.
