They're based on swans, more specifically the black swan, a species from Aus.
First stage is a basic baby swan.
Second stage is based on ballerinas (Swan Lake), tutus, and the "horns" reference the viking helmets from Operas.
Final stage is based on the constellation Cygnus, Opera Valkyries and uses it's wings as shields based on the swan "mothership", when they protect their young.
