Honestly showing May during Lance's battle would have made more sense. She met him, rode on his Gyarados, etc.

May barely saw Steven for less than a minute in the episode, she doesn't care about Hoenn champions so it makes no sense to show her now.

The reason I don't think they'll show May/Max during Steven is they could of shown them during Lance's fight too but didn't. May really has no interest in any of the champions and Max barely acknowledged Steven so I don't see it.

Unlike everywhere else, the Hoenn cast never idolized the champion of their region.
