Just look at X/Y; the arc with Team Flare was mutilated last second because they couldn't realize it in time. Never did Z version to flesh it out properly, so gen 6 remains the scape goat for a lot of genwarfags. X/Y also goes to show they didn't HAVE to chase a particular vision for their game in the form of a third version, because they didn't. DLC wasn't exactly a concept for GBA/DS or even 3DS games to a lesser extent, either, so a third version was a necessary evil to get all their dreams out there. That said, I'd much rather have Platinum 15 years later than D/P, as Platinum is a much better portrayal of Sinnoh, mechanically and aesthetically.
In other words, they tried to fully realize a good game despite their flaws and limitations. If that isn't SOUL, Anon, then I'm not too sure what to tell you.
