The difference is other than Mr. Mime and Jynx, first gen pokes didn't really get into ugly territory. Plus, a lot of the common ones to ding in 1st gen aren't genuinely bad. Grimer and Muk are goo monsters, which are common in RPGs and adventure games. Voltorb and Electrode are the fake item RPG trope. They aren't ugly, they fit well enough. The 'but it's an animal and nothing special, durr' argument is retarded because every gen has a bunch of those.
