If you're talking about some FX / particle thing, those CAN (often) be authored in-engine, and assigned by script to track whatever model, or bone (think: part of the body) like a head, a jaw, or a different object like a fireball.
I don't know how they setup their scripts to target things.
Having said that, changes like this are a likely consequence of not starting with all the existing assets assigned.
It's like taking everything off your desk, and putting it back on. Same contents, and you're familiar with it, but you won't put everything back the exact same way.
