I have a ton of respect for the Japanese and their culture, I don't want or like to impose on them either, and like I said I do have some qualms with the change. Like it's not really a perfect comparison, but if the Black Panther movie had a whitewashed or 100% multicultural version it would be weird for sure because it spits on what it's supposed to represent (although I don't think Pokemon Crystal is supposed to be some Black Panther shit in the same way it would be for African-Americans, it's just a region modeled after the developers home for Japanese audiences first, but I get it).
My gripe with this scenario is the people who want black people removed from Crystal Clear because "they want to preserve traditional Japan", when it's obvious why they really want it. Out of contempt for those types is why I defend the change, but I do think it should be optional, even though that would pander to some undesirables.
I grew up with gen 3 and 4 games, I play romhacks like RR and Inclement Emerald and Drayano Hacks all the time, not being represented isn't a dealbreaker for me and it never was. I don't think a few of the Kimono girls being a few shades darker is Japanese culture erasure either though, especially in a niche romhack, I really do not believe the patch was done with malicious intent either, I'd hope I'm not wrong on that front. Also there definitely is black people in Japan despite being a small minority, and I think they're planning to import more immigrants eventually too. The Hawaii region of Alola had a fuck ton of non-native Hawiians, the American region of Unova had minimal native Americans (was it just Alder...?) but a lot of diversity, and so on and so forth.
