It was a day as any other day, for the young Pokemon advocate N. Except for the fact that on this, rather unfortunate day, his life ended forever. It all started when he decided to reston a mountain a few hours after showing Hilbert his noble cause in battle. Like most of his life he was totally alone, with only the companionship of the wild animals he loved dearly. All his captured friends were soon going to be released, to live their own lives.
After sitting on the mountain for a while, N started to reflect. Images of his life, his small successes and large failures, started streaming in his mind's eye. He always promoted the idea of truth and ideals, and he knew all the same time all hisshort lived companions of be battle were little more than slaves, forced to do his bidding. This thought pervaded his mind, and ultimately left N with a rather serious and adult feeling, which he has never experienced before – self doubt. Was he a hypocrite for using Pokémon in battle, even if it were just for a short time?
He started staring at the round compartment which still held his dear friend. Was he really his friend, or a slave? Were all his values just a lie? If he had not been forced by the mechanism of bondage, would he still be his companion? He readied himself to do something he had done many times before.
Releasing a Pokémon was not a common practice, most adult trainers just sold them to younger, inexperienced ones, so they can have a boost in the sport, and therefore become a productive addition in the growing numbers of practitioners of this recreational activity.
Since he had experienced pretty much everything that was to experience in the world he only felt a twinge of reluctance at the thought of releasing his companions. His infantile optimistic mind couldn't let go of the thought that they might still be his friends, but this time out of their own free will.
