Those things looked like something I would have scribbled in crayon at Sunday school. Like you said, it was so unbelievably, incredibly easy to trick so many people into thinking they had a real, dedicated following, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Honestly, the entire thing was embarrassing to watch, and pretty irritating considering how much of the catalog it clogged up every day.
