If you have friends, but they don't understand/can't compete with you in the metagame, you're right.
If you are blessed with six other Pokepals who all consistently breed/train/battle their 'mons every generation, then you are oh so very wrong.
Actually sitting down with friends in real life and battling it out with Pokemon you painstakingly raised yourself is a priceless feeling. It makes me sad to know that many Pokefans will never experience this.
It's the way the game was meant to be played, with lovingly raised Pokemon and friendly competitive real-life rivals. And no matter how many times the anuspain neckbeards spout how IV breeding is autistic and a waste of Poketime, they can never take that away.
...but again, if you don't have friends to play against in person then yeah it's pointless and Showdown is for you.
