The DS era in general was the best. There's a reason why Platinum, HGSS, and BW2 are often thrown around as recommendations here. They don't come without their problems (Platinum's slow game engine, HGSS's slow level curve/Jhoto Pokemon availability, and BW2's more linear map design) but they still gave us the best Pokemon had to offer despite their problems.
