synergy added to the type strength and weakness chart. it acts to boost or hinder pokemon of different types when used in double battles. eg water pokemon have poor synergy with fire pokemon and reduce effectiveness of their moves, but good synergy with grass pokemon, strengthening their moves, ghost pokemon have good synergy with dark pokemon because ghosts are scarier in the dark, etc.
