I also remember the school playground rumour of Missigno. But none of us could figure out how to get it. I don't remember how I found out, but I was able to catch the glitchy bar-code version of it. I didn't even know there were other versions!
It was fun, sure it was linear but you had to figure out for yourself what to do to progress. If you were smart, you could completely skip some Gyms.
I just had a flash back where I thought Rock Tunnel was just a trial & error puzzle and made it through the whole thing without ever picking up Flash. I was young and got tired of reading NPC dialog, so never spoke to the guy who gives you Flash!
Man... I just had a wave of memories come flooding back.
