It's a spinoff with core mechanics, first of all.
>region is structured like a grid, but for the most part the player can move around freely
>focus is on exploring & solving puzzles over battling; but battling is still there
>you can tackle the gyms/dungeons in any order you want, so long as you have the proper pokemon for puzzle solving and scaling the terrain
>every pokemon is one-note in functionality to push the player to catch everything and consistently rotate their team to see how they function...
>...some mons are adept in combat, some scale terrain, some are made for solving puzzles, some forage for items, some do XYZ better than others, some can do a little of everything albeit slow and not as good...
>...but as long as you have the right slave on your team you can just powerlevel and brute force your way through everything else like what most of you scrubs were doing already
>you can move pokemon to & from a pocket PC on the fly so you won't have to scurry back to the nearest town just to get something that can chop down a tree; your pocket PC would have a limited number of charges before you HAVE to go back to town; and transfering between the pocket PC wouldn't heal your mons so you can't healscum before a big battle
>the "hub" of sorts would be a shanty town that grows as you collect more resources; stores & workout centers would open up for you to buy supplies and train your mons faster and so on
Botw was a polished turd that should only be brought up when discussing how NOT to make an open world game. A LBW-styled Pokemon game would be much more interesting.
