>>18888131Every community needs new members at some point in order to thrive. The lurk more mentality is a time tested tradition that still works, but as more and more new people come in, some naturally slip through, and that dissolves the unity people had at one point, the kind of unspoken rule that everyone agreed to be hostile towards new people, because it will scare off the people that just came for the memes/don't watch champ, and the ones that do stay will do so because they are interested in this thread's topic like everyone else, and the hostility will just discourage them from posting until they are familiar enough with this thread's culture and social environment that they can succesfully imitate it. If Showderp or any general were still truly a place with dedicated posters who all are on the same page, it wouldn't be like this.
If one "newfag" slips through, he starts badly imitating the thread culture and shitposting due to unfamiliarity with what the proper thing to say is. Naturally, other people will see this and be invited in by that posting, because they are in the same mentality: they're new, and think the memes are funny or something like that. You can see how the cycle repeats.
This is why the lurk moar mentality isn't perpetrated anymore and why it does no good to be overly hostile to newfags at this point. There's not a lot that can be done aside from discouraging shitposting and encouraging lurking.
