She would spend a lot of time at the Saffron dojo training and working out, and even moreso after she got kicked out of nurshing school to blow of steam. This is where she got her Hitmonchan.
Miko on the other hand has had his Grandpa act as a sort of mentor. Most of his interests came from spending time with him each summer. Miko's also young and naïve enough to accept advice from anyone older than him really. He's easily impressed and always eager to learn new things.
