The feeling is natural, OP. Personally, I liked BW 1 and 2 back in their time, but the lack of a more elaborate environment akin to Gen VI just breaks the immersion for me once I got back to the game. Now the MIDIesque music sounds wrong, the sprites look off, and the battles aren't as exciting.
Same goes for HGSS, which I loved in my first playthrough even after Johto looked gross after I played it three times: I start playing Black and then go back to restart a save on SS which I couldn't even bring to complete.
