I've watched the entire series and other than DP, I don't think Ash has ever contributed anything. Actually, no, now that I typed that and thought of it more, I don't think Ash contributed to DP's "interactions" either. Paul did all the of the carrying, Ash never provided anything himself to their "interactions". Ash never said anything that challenged Paul's world views, he just yelled at Paul like a kid and kept fighting him until eventually Ash got lucky and won by relying on a _LITERALLY_ chuuni power up from Infernape.
Ash is a nothing character. I'm not saying Liko or Roy are any better, they're not providing anything either. But Ash clearly is not the answer.
PM23 would have been better if it was either Friede was the sole protagonist, probably aged down to fit the "protagonist MUST be a child" checkbox, or Goh. Say what you will about Friede fucking up Liko/Roy's growth, at least he has personality and a good DYNAMIC with Amethio.
