What the Brock anon was getting at, is that the original Pokemania was unlike anything seen comparatively, especially due to the time period in which it arrived. It was literally a cultural changing event similar to the British invasion in scale and depth. It did so without the internet, yet arguably helped spread its adoption with Pokemon fans establishing chatrooms, message boards, websites, etc.
It's hard to replicate that because the conditions to replicate it are no longer there. There would have to be something which eclipses and dominates the current culture while driving the adoption of new technology just to keep pace. AR on smartphones just isn't/wasn't that, though it "rekindled" that earlier nostalgia for older fans who remember the mania era.
