Is the social aspect (ie everyone playing a new game at the same time) a vital part of enjoying Pokemon?
I stopped playing after Gen 2 a long time ago, and recently have been trying to catch up. I've been playing the past generation games one after another (out of order at that) andI find myself just going through the motions, doing the same things: get starter, get abra, proceed to decimate the main story with Starter 3rd evolution and Alakazam.
I don't explore towns or buildings or talk to people. I know they're mostly empty and just tutorials/hints of the people who give you stuff it's mostly junk or an offer to make a meaningless trade. I don't feel I need to do side stories or build a strong team or accomplish other goals like "catch them all" (which is impossible afters gen 2 or 3 anyway) since no one else is playing.
These games aren't really big on story usually, so I don't follow it. Up until and maybe a little past the first badge or even until the 2nd badge the game is basically in tutorial mode. Then after getting 8th badge and beating elite four/pokemon league I may get the legendaries to say I did, but at that point I have no use for them.
So in short I B-line through the mainstory destroying everything in my path with Alakazam and the starter. It feels like I'm forcing myself through these games. They're good games, but I can't find myself really enjoying the experience and I'm not entirely sure why.
