Another important aspect of writing beyond the story is also how it's fleshing out and giving personality to characters that otherwise had only a few lines of dialogue. It's impressive in my opinion how they could take minute details of silent protagonists and one-off comments of NPCs and develop a character around it.

And I disagree, for one the VGC metagame is the most balanced it's ever been since the jump to 3D, even if the singles metagame is a burning mess. At least it has THAT going for it.
