For example, Shedinja has several themes (Cicada Shell / Ninja / Guardian Angel) which merge extremely well and leave a concept that's elegant, easy to understand, and even if you don't understand it first glance, you can appreciate the design and get the general idea of "haunted shell".
Contrast that to some of the themes they force onto Pokemon, especially older ones, where it just doesn't mesh well at all. Like Meowth suddenly becoming a viking troll creature because... Something?
